Purple Moose Poetry Prize in 2009.

After carefully considering all 136 entries, the judges (Zoë Skoulding and Patrick McGuinness)  chose a winner: Precious Asses by ‘JCM’, whose real name is James Methven.

Precious Asses was recently reviewed in Magma (issue 47) by Laurie James, who wrote:
startlingly fresh and funny

beneath the bright surface there is a quiet and irresistible sense of carpe diem
and:
poetic skill of a very high order. One feels the kind of shocked delight that the first readers of Pound’s versions of Homage to Sextus Propertius must have felt. Methven’s versions of Catullus, with their brilliant slangy surface and aching undercurrent of death, are likely to be as permanent.”

The judges also announced the following as Highly Commended entries. While they were generally impressed by the standard of entries, these 6 pamphlets were felt to deserve special recognition:

Cliff Forshaw, Elsewheres
Ian McEwen, Scape
Alasdair Paterson, Noctivagator
Marianne Burton, Songs of the Inarticulate
Matt BrydenThe Turn
Malene EngelundDust
