Purple Moose Prize 2011

PM website logo 2011
Poetry Wales is delighted to be able to finally reveal the results of the 2011 Purple Moose Poetry Prize.

As always, it’s been a challenge for our judges, Zoe Skoulding and (judging the prize for the first time) John Barnie, but they have decided on a winner.

And the Winner is: Archimedes’ Principle by Rebecca Perry. Congratulations Rebecca!

In a slight break from the conventions of the last two competitions, the judges felt that, in addition to listing 3 or 4 highly commended entries, another collection warranted the recognition of being Runner-up: Facing Facts by Tim Love. Well done Tim.

Finally, the four Highly Commended collections are, in no particular order:
Personal Effect by Kate White
Capability Procedures by Ian McEwen
Yod by Cliff Forshaw
Braised Yello by Peter Gruffydd.

Well done to everyone who entered, and made this such an interesting competition. Keep writing, and keep reading Poetry Wales!

Peter Finch in The Western Mail

Thanks to Peter Finch for his kind words about PW in his column ‘The Insider’, in the Western Mail, October 9 2010.

“It is in the new Poetry Wales, however, that revolution is really apparent. In the 1970s, when the late Eric Mottram held the helm of London’s Poetry Review, the English-speaking literary world was split into two mutually opposed factions – the traditionalists and the innovators. In the cause of progress Mottram favoured the work of the latter. In Wales space was only ever available to the former. My own Welsh work sank into the mist.

Thirty years on Zoe Skoulding’ s new issue turns the tables. London’s Poetry Review now represents English poetry’s calm centre while Poetry Wales displays a wide range of innovative work. Alice Entwistle interviewing Wendy Mulford, John Goodby on Welsh modernist poetry. Poetry by Lee Harwood, Ralph Hawkins, Geoffrey Hill, John Powell Ward, and a stream of innovators from inside Wales and without. I enjoyed every page.

It’s taken an age but Wales might at last have caught the world up.”

Purple Moose Poetry Prize 2010

Thanks to you all again for your entries in this year’s competition. As you can tell from the two postponements of the judges’ announcement, the final decision was no easy one, reflecting the high standard of collections.

However, the judges have made their decision:

The winning entry is… ‘Welcome Back to the Country’ by Graham Clifford. Congratulations Graham!

You can buy his collection by clicking here.

‘Direct Method’ by Cliff Forshaw is first runner-up.

The highly commended entries are:
‘Banquet in the Hall of Happiness’ by Victor Tapner
‘The Apologist’ by Matthew Howard

(all real names, although all entries were judged anonymously).

‘Welcome Back to the Country’ will be published by Seren as a pamphlet in the Autumn, and the details above will go on the Poetry Wales website.

Congratulations to all once again!

* The deadline for entries to the Purple Moose Poetry Prize 2010 was May 1. The competition will return at the beginning of 2011.

You can go to the Purple Moose page for more information.

Purple Moose Poetry Prize 2009

Once again, thank you to all the entrants in the first Poetry Wales/Purple Moose Poetry Prize in 2009.

After carefully considering all 136 entries, the judges (Zoë Skoulding and Patrick McGuinness) have chosen a winner: Precious Asses by ‘JCM’, whose real name is James Methven. Congratulations James!

Go to the Purple Moose page for more information, including a list of Highly Commended entries.
